S - "Sierra"
Sector
Revision: 09 Mar 2022

Definition

A Sector is airspace used to control air traffic and is defined by one or more Fixed Airspace Volumes (FAVs). The Sector can use different FAVs when circumstances dictate such as after an airport configuration change, flow changes, etc.

On POSCON, Sectors are organized using the following hierarchy:

  1. Authority - This identifies the bureaucratic authority that is the owner of a particular sector. In most cases, this corresponds directly to a POSCON Division.
    • Example: USA
  2. FIR - This defines the FIR that is the primary owner of a particular sector.
    • Example: KZNY
  3. Facility - This defines the facility that the sector belongs to.
    • Example: N90
  4. Area - This defines the area that the sector covers.
    • Example: JFK
  5. Sector - A sector defines a single airspace consisting of one ore more FAVs.
    • Example: N2G

Simultaneous Offset Instrument Approach (SOIA)
Revision: 21 Feb 2022

Definition

This operation comprises one ILS and one LDA with glide slope. The ILS is aligned with its runway, but the LDA serving the second runway is offset (between 2.5° and 3°) from a parallel track. This offset permits simultaneous instrument approach operations to parallel runways spaced less than 3,000 feet apart, but no less than 750 feet. Because of the offset, this operation is also known as an SOIA.

Special Cargo
Revision: 21 Feb 2022

Definition

Cargo that requires special handling and securing/restraining procedures within the limitations specified in the Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) / Weight and Balance Manual (WBM) approved by the type certificate / supplemental type certificate. Special cargo may be enclosed in an approved bulk compartment if the WBM has limitations supporting procedures for securing and restraining the special cargo.

Sub-Division

When there is an operational need, Divisions can be further divided into Sub-Divisions in order to focus the specialization. A Sub-Division is defined as a group of Division Members that are officially recognized by POSCON for the purpose of conducting certain special aviation-related activities within a Division such as:
